Sports Medicine

Fort Worth Christian School is proud to be one of the few TAPPS 5A schools that employs a full-time, licensed athletic trainer to care for our student-athletes. Athletic trainers are licensed medical professionals who specialize in the prevention, recognition, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries.

Since 2007, Coach Corry Karlen has served as FWC's head athletic trainer. During this time, Coach Karlen has also organized a team of healthcare professionals to assist him in providing the best possible care to our student-athletes. The FWC sports medicine team consists of orthopedic team physicians, family practitioners, concussion specialists, licensed athletic trainers, school nurses, physical therapists, chiropractors, sports nutritionists, and athletic training students. Over the years this team of healthcare professionals has become an integral part in the overall success of our athletic programs.

In our Upper School Sports Medicine course, student athletic trainers physically participate in treatment applications and/or low intensity exercise demonstrations. And much more than just water carriers on a Friday night, our student athletic trainers will also be given responsibilities in pre-game ankle taping while also learning in real-life game situations about the basics of wound care, and ice bag applications. Our student athletic trainers also often receive sideline instruction from our a sports medicine partners from one of the nearby universities like UTA and Texas Wesleyan.

Serving as a Student Athletic Trainer at FWC is one of my favorite things. Working alongside Coach Karlen and my fellow SAT’s is so rewarding. We prepare for practices and games for all middle school and high school home contests and travel with varsity football. We are trained to assist or perform duties such as: first aid, CPR/AED, on-field management of injuries, prevention of injuries, rehabilitation and healing, exercises used in the rehabilitation process, sports nutrition, proper hydration practices, and taping and bracing of athletic injuries.

Coach Karlen’s “Intro to Sports Medicine” class is where I learned to prevent, treat, and evaluate athletic injuries using fun labs, and hands-on practice. Coach Karlen, Assistant Athletic Director and Head Athletic Trainer, is highly respected at FWC and among other schools’ athletic trainers because of the high level of care he gives his athletes. He serves the Fort Worth Christian athletic community with excellence and compassion, always putting the athlete’s best interests first.”
